This family had lived on the property for a number of years and had grown to love the neighborhood and location. So when deciding to build their new home, they removed the former house and built on the same spot, making sure to preserve the beautiful tree in the front lawn.

The owners had two goals for their new home. First, they wanted their home to be environmentally sustainable with the goal of becoming EarthCraft certified. This was accomplished through the careful management of construction debris, the use of geothermal wells and accompanying HVAC, enhanced insulation, energy efficient appliances, and other smart technologies. As a result, the house received EarthCraft's Gold certification.

Second, they wanted their home to be of a scale that did not overwhelm the neighboring houses, as is often the case with new homes built in established neighborhoods. Thus, the height of the building was controlled by adopting a 1 1/2 story design.

The facade of the home was designed around the owner’s desire to have a front porch deep to have a front porch deep enough to allow for a porch swing and additional seating for friends and family who might stop by for a visit. Flanking the porch are twin gables with recessed elliptical arches and an inset window to add interest and variety to the facade. The result is an inviting and symmetrical architectural composition.

The plan is an open one with an entry hall large enough for a grand piano. This space opens directly to the great room, which combines both living and dining room functions and is open to the kitchen. A glass enclosed breakfast and sitting area off the kitchen also opens to the pool terrace, which gives the plan a circular flow.

The master suite is strategically located on the left corner of the main floor so that it has privacy from the great room while still enjoying a view of the pool and terrace. Three more bedrooms are located upstairs along with a home office, which has a central location. The office is a favorite space of the owners because it has a balcony overlooking the pool. On a spring or fall day, it is pleasant to open the French doors and let the cool air flow into the house while they work.
